FRIDAY WRAPUP AT TOWNSEND LAW, 11/22/24:

  • Justice returns to the New York City Department of Correction. Sarena Townsend negotiated a settlement between Ruben Benitez and NYC DOC whereby Benitez was reinstated to his rightful position, Associate Commissioner of Internal Affairs at DOC, and paid $85,600 by the City. Benitez had been demoted last year by the disgraced former DOC Commissioner Louis Molina after Benitez informed a federal monitor and the New York City Department of Investigation of Molina's illegal orders and coverups. • CASE DISMISSED: In a miscarriage of justice, our client was arrested after he was brutally beaten by a stranger. When the stranger was arrested, he claimed our client broke his mirror, and police arrested our client while he was bleeding profusely in an ambulance. He was charged with felony Criminal Mischief. Ms. Townsend advocated aggressively with the Manhattan District Attorney's Office and the case was dismissed at the second court date. • MURDER TRIAL: Week 4. Ms. Townsend is on trial in Brooklyn Supreme Court defending her client on Murder in the First Degree charges. The prosecution has presented several witnesses, DNA and fingerprint evidence, and surveillance video footage to a jury in their attempt to prove our client guilty of stabbing his former housemate to death. All of the civilians in the case speak Russian, adding to the complexity of the case. We expect the People to rest next week, with summations after Thanksgiving.
